About Chhapra Gram Panchayat

Chhapra (छपरा) is a village-level local government (Gram Panchayat) in Purkaji block, Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. For land and revenue matters it falls in Muzaffarnagar tehsil, and the district belongs to the Saharanpur Division. The official LGD code of this panchayat is 81505.

The panchayat consists of a single revenue village, Chhapra, so the Gram Sabha here is made up of all registered voters of that village.

From Muzaffarnagar headquarters, Chhapra is approximately 14 km away in the north-east direction. Chhapra is about 6.1 km south-west of the centre of Purkaji block. For rail travel, Rohana Kalan station (around 10 km away) is the closest.

Within Purkaji block there are 43 gram panchayats (and 498 across Muzaffarnagar district); Chhapra is one of them. Its voters elect their MLA from the Purqazi assembly constituency and its MP from the Bijnor Lok Sabha constituency.

This page brings together everything a resident or visitor of Chhapra usually needs: who the Gram Pradhan, MLA and MP are, which villages make up the panchayat, where the polling booths and nearby facilities are, which welfare schemes apply, and how to get documents such as family register copies, income or caste certificates.

As in most of rural Uttar Pradesh, farming, wheat in the Rabi season and paddy in the Kharif season, depending on the area, along with dairy and wage work under MGNREGA, is the main source of livelihood around Chhapra. Administration

Chhapra Gram Panchayat is governed by an elected Gram Pradhan (village head), an Up-Pradhan and ward members, all chosen by the Gram Sabha, every adult registered voter of the panchayat’s villages. Day-to-day records are kept by the Panchayat Secretary (Gram Panchayat Adhikari) posted by Purkaji block, who also registers births and deaths for the panchayat.

Every gram panchayat in Uttar Pradesh is required to form 6 committees: Planning and Development Committee (chaired by the Pradhan), Education Committee, Construction Works Committee, Health and Welfare Committee, Administrative Committee and Water Management Committee. The Gram Sabha must meet at least twice a year (after the Kharif and Rabi harvests) to review the accounts and approve the Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP), which is then uploaded on the eGramSwaraj portal.
